The Process

How Fostering Works

Step 1

We Identify a Dog in Need

Through our Waiʻanae Coast outreach, we find dogs that need immediate placement in a safe home.

Step 2

We Connect With Our Partners

We reach out to our network of trusted rescue partners who manage the foster and adoption process.

Step 3

You Open Your Home

You provide a loving, temporary home where the dog can decompress, heal, and learn to trust again.

Step 4

Our Partner Finds the Forever Home

The rescue partner handles the adoption process and finds the perfect forever family for your foster dog.

All supplies, food, and veterinary care are provided. You'll have ongoing support every step of the way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need experience to foster?

Not at all. Our rescue partners provide full guidance and support for every foster. All you need is a safe space, some patience, and a willingness to give a dog a chance. You'll never be on your own.

What if I already have pets at home?

Many of our fosters have resident pets. We carefully match foster dogs with homes where they'll thrive, and we always do a temperament assessment first. You'll know upfront whether a particular dog is a good fit for your household.

How long is a typical foster placement?

Most foster placements last 2 to 8 weeks, but we're flexible. Some dogs find their forever home quickly, while others need a bit more time. We also offer short-term "sleepover" fosters for dogs who just need a break from the shelter environment.

What supplies and support are provided?

Everything your foster dog needs is covered — food, crate, leash, toys, and all veterinary care including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and any emergency treatment. You'll also have a dedicated support contact available whenever you need help or have questions.

Can I adopt my foster dog?

Yes — it's called a "foster fail" and it happens more often than you'd think! If you and your foster dog are a perfect match, our rescue partner can walk you through the adoption process. There's no pressure either way.
